The holidays are a time for joy, family, friends—and, let’s be real, a touch of holiday chaos. From gift shopping to family gatherings, maintaining your sanity can feel like a feat. Whether you’re juggling kids, hosting family, or just trying to keep up with the endless parties, these 20 tips will help you not just survive, but actually enjoy the holiday season.
Here are 20 tips to help you stay calm, keep your sanity intact, and actually enjoy the holidays this year.
1. Set Realistic Expectations
The holidays don’t have to look like a scene from a Hallmark movie. Embrace the imperfections and let go of the pressure to create a flawless experience. Be realistic and give yourself permission to enjoy the not-so-perfect holiday moments.
2. Stick to a Budget
Between gifts, dinners, and decor, holiday expenses add up. Overspending is one of the biggest holiday stressors. Set a budget early on, and stick to it to avoid financial stress come January.
3. Make a List (and Check It Twice!)
Take a page out of Santa's playbook and make a checklist of the things that you need to do, buy, and plan. When we take the things that our mind is worrying about, and then put them on paper, it can ease the stress of being overwhelmed.
4. Take the Pressure off Gift-Giving
Give yourself a break from the “perfect gift” mentality. Instead of splurging on extravagant gifts, consider thoughtful alternatives like homemade gifts, donations in someone’s name, or even an experience, like a movie night together. Sometimes, presence beats presents.
5. Learn the Art of Saying "No"
You can't attend every single holiday party or event, buy every gift, or meet every expectation. In fact, trying to only leaves you stressed and exhausted. Politely declining some invites allows you to save your energy for those things that matter the most to you.
6. Delegate, Delegate, Delegate!
Whether it's asking family members to bring a dish to pass or enlisting help for holiday prep, you don’t have to do everything yourself! Ask for help with meal prep, shopping, or decorating. It’s amazing how much less stressful things feel when you’re not going it alone.
7. Prioritize Self-Care
It’s easy to put self-care on the back burner, but during the holidays, it’s more important than ever. Set aside some time each day just for you, even if it's just 15 minutes. Go for a short walk, indulge in a festive treat, or devote some quiet time with a book. Recharging your battery helps ground you and helps you tackle the rest of the day.
8. Keep it Simple
Simplicity is underrated. Whether it's sticking to tried-and-true recipes or scaling back on decor, a simpler approach can create a more enjoyable season
9. Don't Forget to Move!
Physical activity reduces stress, boosts mood, and gives you a burst of energy. Dance around the kitchen, take a brisk walk, or find a quick workout to break up the busyness.
10. Eat Well - But Enjoy the Treats
The holidays are full of indulgent treats. Yes, enjoy the holiday cookies and treats, but try to balance them out with nutritious choices and a bit of movement. You’ll feel better and avoid the dreaded holiday food coma if you eat a little lighter before indulging. Your body and mind will thank you.
11. Limit the Scroll
It's easy to feel the "holiday perfection" pressure on when scrolling on social media. Simply scrolling through your accounts quickly leads to comparison, which is a quick route to stress. Set scrolling boundaries, take a break, or even set time limits on your devices to help you stay present.
12. Set Boundaries with Family
The holidays often mean extended family time, which can be both wonderful and challenging. If certain conversations or behaviors trigger stress, set gentle boundaries. It’s okay to change the subject, take a breather, leave the event or gathering, or decline to go altogether.
13. Keep Traditions Flexible
Traditions are meant to bring joy, not stress. If a certain holiday tradition no longer resonates or feels like a chore, let it go or modify it. Create new traditions that suit your current season of life. From a hot chocolate bar night to a no-gift holiday dinner, new traditions can bring fresh joy.
14. Get Your Rest
Yes, there’s a lot to do, but skimping on sleep will only make you more stressed. Lack of sleep makes everything feel more overwhelming. Give yourself permission to prioritize rest - it's amazing how much better everything looks after a good night's sleep. Aim for at least seven hours, and if that’s hard to achieve, take short naps or rest when you can.
15. Practice Gratitude
The holidays are a wonderful time to reflect on the good things in life. Focusing on what you’re grateful for helps shift your perspective in a positive direction. Keep a gratitude journal write down three things you appreciate each day or share what you're thankful for with loved ones. It’s a quick way to recenter and stay grounded.
16. Accept Help When It's Offered
Many of us have a hard time letting others help, but people genuinely want to lend a hand. Let your friends or family pitch in when they offer—you don’t have to do it all yourself.
17. Remember, It's Okay to Feel All the Feels
The holidays bring up all sorts of emotions—some joyful, some sad. Honor your feelings, even if the season brings up difficult memories, and allow yourself to feel without judgment.
18. Give Yourself Permission to Let Go
Missed cards, late gifts, or a last-minute cancellation? It happens! Cut yourself some slack. It’s better to release things beyond your control than to carry guilt into the new year.
19. Laugh Often (Especially at Yourself
Embrace the chaos and find humor in the little things. Laughter is one of the best stress relievers and makes everything feel a little lighter. Have fun with the inevitable holiday quirks and mishaps.
20. Give Yourself Grace
Above all, be kind to yoruself. Holidays are beautiful but messy, and you're doing your best. At the end of the day, the holidays are about connecting and sharing joy. Don’t get so lost in the details that you forget to enjoy the season. Breathe, savor the small moments, laugh off the mishaps, and soak it all in.
The holidays might be busy and full of expectations, but with a little planning, some self-kindness, and a big dose of humor, they can be a lot less stressful. So go ahead—take a deep breath, prioritize what truly matters, and make this holiday season one that brings you peace and joy.
